Weekend Update

Dear Parishioners,

Who would have ever imagined that at the beginning of the new school year, our children would still be social distance learning as this pandemic doesn’t seem to let up? Who would have imagined that the record setting heat wave in August would have brought with it a lightning storm which sparked raging fires that have caused many to lose homes, caused many to evacuate their homes with the uncertainty of ever coming back?

In unprecedented times like these, where there are so many unknowns and uncertainties, it is important not to lose hope, and trust in God. Hope is trusting in God, but in order to trust in God, we need to first get to know him. Jesus’ question to the Apostles “Who do people say I am?” is a question for each of us, as well. In other words, Jesus is asking us, “How well do you know, trust and love me?” The phrase “To know me is to love me” may be a bit of a cliché but does ring true. How well do you know and love Jesus? I share this prayer that is attributed to Fr. Arrupe, SJ, that has inspired my spiritual journey to love God in all things.

Nothing is more practical than

finding God, than

falling in Love

in a quite absolute, final way.

What you are in love with,

what seizes your imagination, will affect everything.

It will decide

what will get you out of bed in the morning,

what you do with your evenings,

how you spend your weekends,

what you read, whom you know,

what breaks your heart,

and what amazes you with joy and gratitude.

Fall in Love, stay in love,

and it will decide everything.

May God’s blessings be upon you and your family as we continue to pray for an end to the pandemic; healing for those infected; condolences for those who have lost a loved one and for the safety of our firefighters and all affected by the fires.

Peace and Trust in Christ,

Fr. John
